As you read yesterday, I’m taking a little step back to think about what I want to do with What I Wore in the future and I’d love to know what YOU like/dislike about this site. Got 5 minutes? I’d love your feedback!

I'm Jessica, an artist based in the beautiful Midwestern countryside, living my best life with my partner Adam and our children.

I'm on a mission to Make, Do & Mend my life by shopping second hand first, up-cycling and making anything I can by myself.

I love historic costuming and have recently created 1780s outfits for myself and my children! See them here!

Join me as I share the ins and outs of my life as a stay at home mom, living in the countryside and fixing up our farmhouse.

Giving an old hat I made a fresh set on the blocks. These are custom blocks I use to make my classic fedora with a longer front and shorter back brim. The straw has a nice patina from previous summers (versus the beige you get from fresh straw hoods!). I think I’ll put on a blue toned band (I like to use vintage neckties!) and I have a dozen or so I could pick from (I’m afraid if I go thrifting I’ll be tempted to start something new and I need to start Bea’s dresses NOW!) .

Guys! I am so pumped to rock my self made wardrobe next week. And PHOTOS! What I Wore will make a short return so I can show off my makes. Now that I’ve made my own jeans, I don’t know if I’ll ever buy another pair again. .

Check out my stories if you have no idea what I’m talking about! 👖#memade #selfmade #millinery #imadeit #hatdesign
Let’s start a discussion on what a fair hourly wage looks like for skilled labor. Not something you can be trained in over the course of a week or a month, rather a skill set that takes years of education or practice to achieve. I asked this question and got over 100 replies. I’m talking about this in my stories today, and I’ll save it as a highlight for reference if you come to this post down the road. .
.
.
.

Over half of my respondents said $20-30 was a fair wage. $30/hr = $60000/yr. But if you’re working on your own, you still have to pay for health care and don’t really have vacation (do any entrepreneurs?). So the take away pay is far less. .
.
.
.
Nearly 30 people gave me an hourly rate below $20/hr, one as low as $8. In most places that’s less than you’d make working at a car wash (and for the record, minimum wage in my state is still at $7.25 and set to rise to $15 by 2021).
.
.
.
All this just opens up so many dialogues on what fair and living wages consist of and how men are so much less likely to question the value or worth of their work than women. One reader asked “would a mechanic or plumber (usually male) feel “bad” for charging $100/hr?” (Answer: eff no). .

So who wants to jump in here and make a point? Do you feel fairly compensated? Afraid to ask for more? I’m excited to hear from you.
Psssst. Doing a little closet clean out sale over at @whatiworeshop. Some vintage, some new, needs fabulous women (or men!) to love and wear these pieces! #shopmycloset #secondhandfirst #instasale
Y’all. Flash flooding, school cancelled, my free morning not so free anymore, frantically cleaning so my Inlaws don’t think we’re slobs, kids are stir crazy and giving myself a pretty salad is the least I can do. And going to eat @cardinalspirits tonight so gotta balance for now.
Stripes and lines? Don’t mind if I do!! My post for today’s #georgianjanuary theme are my recently finished corded stays! There are a ton more photos on my blog! #19thcentury #cordedstays #corstery #corset #stays #cordedcorset #sewing @dames_a_la_mode
My #19thcenty regency stays are complete! I have a new blog post all about the construction and more photos if you care to have a look! starsandfield.com.
